This evening around 6:50 I stopped by a regular Woodcock display site in my
neighborhood and parked at the side of the road. There was a Woodcock
peenting from its usual area in a field next to the road. I sat there
listening and I heard some leaves rustling alongside the road. I looked over
and there was another Woodcock probing around in the dead leaves. I assumed
it was the female. I watched for about 15 minutes until it got too dark
because I wanted to see if she would react in any way to the male's display.
The male was doing his flight display frequently, but she didn't seem terribly
impressed. The only time it looked like she seemed the least bit interested
was once when she seemed to glance up momentarily as the male was coming down
from its heights. The closest the male came down near her was about 20 feet
or so away. A car drove by, but that didn't seem to bother either of them.
This spot is off NC 191 on Grandview Lane across from the French Broad
Baptist Church in Henderson County. You should start hearing the Woodcock
peenting almost as soon as you turn onto Grandview Lane. This one has been
going at it at least a couple of weeks, maybe longer. It will probably
continue for a while yet. Let me know if you need directions. It's a pretty
good place to view them as it is quite open and quite close to a road with
very little traffic.
