workshop for beginning birders

Elisha Mitchell Audubon will conduct a workshop this month in Asheville,
NC, on the basics of birding. Everyone from backyard bird-watchers to
aspiring Big Day birders can benefit.

Students will learn where and when to look for birds, how to use binoculars
effectively, and how to identify most birds they see. They will also gain a
greater understanding of bird behavior. Handouts will include a list of
birding resources.

Workshop members are asked to donate $15 to cover course expenses (Audubon
members, $10); any excess will go to Beaver Lake Bird Sanctuary.

Led by two experienced birders, the workshop will feature two sessions --
one in the classroom and one in the field. Participants (max of 20) should
bring field guides and binoculars to both sessions.

The classroom session will be Thursday, April 18, 7 to 9:30 p.m., at the
Botanical Gardens of Asheville, Weaver Blvd. near Broadway.

The field trip (for registered workshop participants only) is scheduled
Saturday, April 20, from
8:30 to 11:30 a.m., at the Beaver Lake Bird Sanctuary, Merrimon Ave., east
of Beaver Lake.
