Horry Cty rambling, 4-7

Hello y'all,
Hummingbird games began here at 8:26 this morning with the first chase
of the season. Immediately afterward, the victor moved his preferred perch a
good bit closer to a cpl of feeders. I do believe he considers them his now.
Cpl of robins got into it with one another shortly thereafter. Still lotsa
Chippies and a few White-throats hanging around, few goldfinches, house
finches. Carolina Wrens apparently feeding young, taking beakfuls of suet
into the understory of an unimproved lot.
After such a great start, it seemed there was nothing left to do but go
ride around and look for birds. So I did.
New Rd. had Parula, Pine, Prairie, Yellow-throated, Yellow-rumped
warblers, gnatcatchers on parade, RC kinglets, White-eyed Vireos, Tree,
Rough-winged and Barn Swallows, Chimney Swift, 2 Barred Owls conversing at
mid-morning, Red-shouldered and Cooper's hawks, Downy, Hairy, Red-headed,
Red-bellied, Pileated woodpeckers, a pair of Wood Duck drakes, Great Egret,
Fish Crows, grackle sex. oh boy...
From there back out into "the country" near the Little Pee Dee. Summer
Tanager (first of season for me,) Parula, Pine, Prairie, a Black-and-White,
dueling Prothonotarys, a Hooded singing in the very same spot as Thursday,
Yellow-throated, tons of Yellow-rumpeds, numerous White-eyed Vireo, a Hermit
Thrush, Gray Catbird eyeing me suspiciously as it turned over leaves in a
wet area, Brown Thrashers singing. A single, immaculately plumaged
Swallow-tailed Kite (first of season) foraging over an ag. field along Pee
Dee Hwy, Purple Martins at a number of martin houses, cpl of Cattle Egrets.
A ride to Bucksport was pretty much a waste of time; lotsa Barn
Swallows, a few bluebirds, starlings, cpl of crow sp. foraging in a recently
tilled area. No shorebirds, not even a Killdeer.
Back home in time for more hummingbird chases, and the return of Chimney
Swifts to our chimney.
Oh, it was just a beautiful day, ya'll...

Cheers,

;-)
