big day in the yard, Pickens, SC, Saturday



44 species in my yard in one day is a very good total for my current location 
for several reasons.  I live in town with residences on three sides and a 
high school building on the fourth side.  Also, I'm in the upper piedmont, so 
that makes big numbers harder to obtain compared with the coastal plain.  And 
finally, the landbird migration was scant.  

The most interesting aspect was observing Broad-winged Hawks reverse their 
fall migration route to go north -- I saw 18 of them, but there surely were 
more when I wasn't looking.  It turned out to be a fine spring hawk migration 
day over my yard (see the list below).

I would love to have this kind of yard day with a decent passerine migration 
at the same time!  Also missing were D-c. Cormorants, Great Blue Heron, 
Ring-billed Gulls, Barn Owl, and N. Flicker which have been fairly regular 
before yesterday.  Here's what showed up:
