Here's part of a small article from the Durham Herald Sun newspaper
yesterday, 4/9, which concerned some disturbing news regarding the area where
last fall's Snowy Owl was sighted:
Part of that article:
"Vandals destroyed nearly a mile of fencing at the state park here,
knocking down signs and disturbing acres of sensitive plant and animal
habitat.
The culprits spent several hours Sunday night or early Monday morning in
a small four-wheel-drive vehicle running over 300 or more fence posts in a
row, said Greg Schneider, superintendent of the Fort Fisher State Recreation
Area.
The vandals created their own entrance to drive through Fort Fisher to
the Bald Head Island Natural Area...."
It goes on to say that damage is estimated at $10,000, which doesn't include
"the unknown damage done to the critical habitat of more than 16 species of
threatened or endangered species" and that most of the signs knocked down
marked the sensitive habitat areas.
