Caw Caw Park, SC

The following are highlights of the morning birdwalks at Charleston County's
Caw Caw Park in Ravenel, SC led by Perry Nugent every Wednesday and Saturday
at 8:30 am.

July 17, 2002. 58 species were seen and/or heard. The most interesting
were; 1 Mississippi Kite, 4 Swallow-tailed Kites, 2 Red-shouldered Hawks, 1
Red-tailed Hawk, 2 Adult and 4 young Black-necked Stilts, 2 Solitary
Sandpipers, 2 Spotted Sandpipers, 6 Pectoral Sandpipers, 10 Ruby-throated
Hummingbirds, 1 Northern Flicker, 1 Northern Rough-winged Swallow, 10
Blue-gray Gnatcatchers ( female is still feeding 2 small babies ), 2 Wood
Thrushes, 1 Louisiana Waterthrush, 6 Blue Grosbeaks, 6 Indigo Buntings, and
6 Painted Buntings . Saw a full size young Painted Bunting helping an adult
female feed a very young ( short tail, downy feathering, smallish ) baby
that appeared to have just left the nest. This reminds me of watching full
size Bluebird fledglings helping their parents feed the new babies on many
occasions. Could this suggest that some Painted Buntings also have two
broods?
