Hello, this is an August 8 update of the Carolina Rare Bird Alert featuring 
birding news from North and South Carolina sponsored by the Carolina Bird 
Club. Highlights on this report include:

AM. GOLDEN PLOVERS
BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPERS
LONG-BILLED CURLEWS
SOOTY TERNS
REDDISH EGRETS
HUDSONIAN GODWITS

Three AM. GOLDEN PLOVERS, 5 BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPERS and other expected 
shorebirds were present at a sod farm NW of Wilmington , NC on 8-1. The farm 
is on SR 87 at the intersection of Ellwell Ferry RD. This is about 30 miles 
NW of Wilmington. Whenever entering such facilities to bird be sure to obtain 
permission.

Two adult SOOTY TERNS  were on the beach at Cape Fear Point on Bald Head 
Island, NC on 7-25. These terns were part of a 500+ tern flock there.

REDDISH EGRETS  have been seen at Wrightsville Beach, NC at the end of the 
road at Shell Island Resort,and near Morehead City , NC at the east end of 
the Shackleford Banks (part of Cape Lookout National Seashore) where 3 
subadult birds were present 7-27.

2 LONG-BILLED CURLEWS were present at the east end of the Shackleford Banks 
on 7-27. Also present were 19 PIPING PLOVERS, 50 WILSON'S PLOVERS, and 30 
MARBLED GODWITS.

3 HUDSONIAN GODWITS  were seen in North Pond at Pea Island NWR (NC) on 8-7.

Space is available on pelagic birding trips from Hatteras, NC on 8-10,11 and 
8-24, 25.Trips will leave out of Manteo, NC on 8-17, 18 and 31. Call Brian
