Hello, this is a June 20 update of the Carolina Rare Bird Alert featuring
birding news from North and South Carolina sponsored by the Carolina Bird Club.
Highlights on this report include:
HERALD PETREL
FEA'S PETREL
RED-BILLED TROPICBIRDS
BLACK-BELLIED WHISTLING- DUCKS
LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL
GRAY KINGBIRDS

Offshore birding in North Carolina has gotten off to a great start this
spring/summer. Six RED-BILLED TROPICBIRDS have been seen since Memorial Day weekend
off of Hatteras, NC. FEA'S PETREL and HERALD PETREL have also been seen in
the same time period. There is ample opportunity to go birding offshore in NC.
The next trips are scheduled July 19 , 20, a good time for tropicbirds and the
rare Pterodroma petrels. BAND-RUMPED STORM PETRELS and LEACH'S STORM PETRELS
are also seen that time of year. Visit Brian Patteson's site at
<http://www.seabirding.com> for details on how to reserve a spot on an upcoming trip.

Two BLACK-BELLIED WHISTLING-DUCKS were seen at Snead's Ferry, NC on June 10.
The origin of the ducks is unknown but birders interested in trying to see
these birds can go to the North Shore Country Club and look in a pond at the 4th
tee of the golf course. From NC 210 near the Topsail Island bridge turn onto
Seascape Dr.. Take a left onto Captain's Dr. Between 104 and 110 Captain's
Drive is a gravel path that leads to the 4th tee.

LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULLS occasionally summer on the Outer Banks. An adult
and a 3rd year bird were seen on the beach just south of Avon, NC on June 10.

Two GRAY KINBIRDS were seen in NC in late May but both birds were seen
heading north and were not seen later. On 5-26 one was at Cape Lookout, NC and on
5-31 one was at the south end of Wrightsville Beach, NC.

Thanks this week to John Fussell, Patrick Coin, and John Sill for their calls
and reports. Some of this information was gleaned from Carolinabirds.
