Purple Martins

It appears that the property on which a Purple Martin colony nearby will be
sold and developed. This may take place later this year. The martins are
"safe" for this breeding season.
There is another colony only two or three miles away. It is active, but
contains a lot of unoccupied gourds.
Can anyone tell me how likely birds returning to the first colony area and
finding no nesting boxes next spring would be to move to the second colony?
Do established colonies accept martins from "outside" readily?
Thanks for any insight anyone may provide.
