Baby Ducks

Hi there!

I've been away from the list for a couple of weeks, so this may have been mentioned before. I was at Lake Lynn off of Lynn Rd. in North Raleigh on Sunday, and was very surprised to see three downy little Muscovy (according to a fellow park visitor) ducks. They were extremely young, two brown and yellow and one a sort of orange and yellow. According to a local resident, there was a brood hatched out right before Christmas, of 8 babies. One was sent to a rehabilitator after getting stuck in mud, and four others perished in the cold.

The remaining three babies seemed cocky and energetic, but I hate to think what the recent weather may have done. The mother was there as well, but did not seem especially interested in her offspring. When I saw the babies, they were near the wooden walkway along the West bank of the lake, near the back.
