You're at about the same elevation as we are in Flat Rock so you should be
able to attract about six species of woodpecker.
Suet is the way to doit. (sorry).
I wouldn't spend the time on a nest box since,to have any success ,you
pack the box with sawdust so the birds can excavate it themselves and even
that doesn't usually work. They require large trees for nesting so may have
been disturbed by the timber cutting, 'tho I suspect you're just hearing the
courting calls. Pileateds tend to stay in pairs throughout the winter and
begin the mating process pretty early.  They are only aggressive toward
others of the same species so will not prevent other woodpeckers from coming
to your property.
