Phoebes

While the Eastern Phoebe is a year-round resident in Fairfield county, I
was nonetheless pleased to hear at least one individual calling loudly this
morning before I left for work. That was simply Act One, however.

As I stepped out the door to drive in, I heard an unfamiliar "ree-bit!"
note very close that sounded like a Phoebe call of some sort. I looked
into the smaller sweetgum right at the back stoop to find two Phoebes. As
I watched, they seemed to be "chasing" - the calling bird would fly up to
where the other bird was sitting and the second bird would then fly a short
distance away. They did this several times. At one point, the "chaser"
flew right up on the second bird and "hovered" for just a second, calling
all the while. The second bird would reply with the same "ree-bit!" note
occasionally. After a few rounds of "chase" they departed over the house.
I found them in the front yard, in a small winged elm tree, still
"ree-bit!"ing.

Is it too much to hope that I might at last have a taker for the "Phoebe
shelves" on the porch?
