Hello, this is a March 30 update of the Carolina Rare Bird Alert featuring
birding news from North and South Carolina sponsored by the Carolina Bird
Club. Highlights on this report include:

SWALLOW-TAILED KITE
LECONTE'S SPARROW
LONG-EARED OWL
WHITE PELICAN
EARED GREBES

A SWALLOW-TAILED KITE was seen at Atlantic, NC on 3-23. Late March through
April is the best time to hope to see this species in NC as it is an annual
spring overshoot; especially in the eastern counties.

Up to two LECONTE'S SPARROWS continue to be seen in Mecklenburg Co. NC north
of Charlotte. For details contact me at 704-532-6336 or at PiephoffT@aol.com.

The Carolina Raptor Center reports that a LONG-EARED OWL was found injured in
western Lincoln Co. in NC. This is the rarest and the most elusive owl that
regularly occurs in the state.

A WHITE PELICAN has been seen a couple of times in the upper reaches of Lake
Norman in Catawba Co. Both times the bird was seen around Marker 25. It has
not been reported since 3-25 but could still be around that lake. Occurence
of this species at Lake Norman is not unprecedented. Seven birds were present
in Lincoln Co. waters about 8 years ago.

Two EARED GREBES were seen at Ebenezer Park on the shore of Lake Wylie in
Rock Hill, SC on 3-25. This is the same location where the snow bunting was
present earlier this year.

Thanks this week to Dave Lovett, Betty O'Leary (Carolina Raptor Center), John
Fussell,Steve Stiffler, Faye Metzl for their calls and reports.
