Hi C-birders,
Re the TOS spring meeting: I took a course in "Bird Biology and
Conservation" from Chuck Smith while I was a Cornell undergraduate. I can
second the opinion of how entertaining a speaker he is. Even listening to
him lecture twice a week for four months, I never had any trouble staying
awake in his class.
As long I already brought up the topic of TV shows on birding, I should
mention "Acorn the Nature Nut" on Animal Planet. Most of his shows deal
with insects, reptiles, and other creepy-crawly critters, but at least
two episodes (probably more) focus on birdwatching. John's a lot of fun.
The Duke library is in the process of disposing of the library of the
late, great Joe Bailey. Many of the more valuable things have been sold,
and the remainder is being left out for anyone who wants it. I looked
through the boxes the other day and found a pile of bird-related things.
All are from the Smithsonian, and most are basically museum collection
notes. Still, they contain discussions of behavior, ecology, and
distribution of each species, and the authors include a couple of
legendary figures of North American ornithology. The "Arctic Adaptation"
book I thought was the most interesting. The bird titles are below; there
were also a number of other publications on plants, insects, geography,
and general biology, many in portuguese. The bird-related publications
are listed below: anyone with interest in them should come by Duke's Bio
Sci building and pick them up, or contact one of the carolinabirders here
(me, Will, Jeff, lots of others) and have us get them for you.
