shorebird success

Identifying shorebirds is definitely simplified when only a few species are
present. Last weekend I was sorting throught the variety at Huntington
Beach State Park. This weekend I had six species at home on the "grassy" mud
flats of a lowered lake. Great views of spotted and solitary SP feeding and
in flight; lots of time to check out the Least SP.

Least sandpiper 20+
Solitary sandpiper 6+
Spotted sandpiper 6+
Killdeer - year round residents
Common snipe 1
Lesser yellowlegs 2

Other highlights
Osprey - fly by
Purple Martins
Green heron (heard only)
Orchard oriole
prairie warbler (heard only)
black and white warbler (heard only)

42 species in all for the weekend within a quarter mile of home and at least
3 common back yard birds are missing.
