Fwd: Bird Help

Cbirders,

I just got a message from a Candace Williams, a biologist friend at the
beach; it seems several bird colonies could use someone to keep an eye on
them over the breeding season. I have forwarded her message, in pertinent
part:

In a message dated 6/11/00 3:53:54 PM Eastern Daylight Time,

<< In traveling the coast the past week or so doing the Piping Plover census,

ended up fencing a three acre Least tern colony on the east end of
Sunset Beach which tripled in size within the three days it took me to
fence and post it. After discussing the problems with the state project
leader, Dave Allen, he asked me to try to see if I could recruit a
volunteer coordinator for each site that would be willing to monitor
Colonial waterbirds and nesting shorebirds (i.e., Wilson's, oystercatchers,
skimmers, least terns, etc.) from April 1 to August 31 on a weekly
basis. The needed sites are: Ocean Isle, Sunset/Bird Island, Holden
Beach, Oak Island, and Emerald Isle. Someone suggested the Carolina
Bird listserv. Do you know how to subscribe or post items of this
nature on that listserv? I'd love to know any other suggestions or
contacts that you might have that could help us with this situation.

Please reply directly to Candace at < tortuga@coastalnet.com > if you have
some time to spare this summer or if you have questions, suggestions or
comments.

Hi Hal! Though I'm considered a "turtlelady" now, I am still doing some
bird work for the state and am in need of your expert help. In
traveling the coast the past week or so doing the Piping Plover census,
I discovered numerous sights that need protection and monitoring
(particularly least tern colonies/oystercatchers/skimmers/etc.). I
ended up fencing a three acre Least tern colony on the east end of
Sunset Beach which tripled in size within the three days it took me to
fence and post it. After discussing the problems with the state project
leader, Dave Allen, he asked me to try to see if I could recruit a
volunteer coordinator for each site that would be willing to monitor
Colonial waterbirds and nesting shorebirds ( ie. Wilson's, oystercat.,
skimmers, least terns, etc.)from April 1 to August 31 on a weekly
basis. The needed sites are: Ocean Isle, Sunset/Bird Island, Holden
Beach, Oak Island, and Emerald Isle. Someone suggested the Carolina
Bird listserve. Do you know how to subscribe or post items of this
nature on that listserve? I'd love to know any other suggestions or
contacts that you might have that could help us with this situation.
Hope all is going well with you! Do come for a visit in Beaufort...I
have a little cottage just off of Taylor's Creek...you're certainly
welcome. I'd welcome the opportunity to "talk birds...rather than sea
turtles" for a change! Ha! Ha!
Cheers!
