Kestrels nested at a large shipping plant on Crawford Road in Statesville, NC
this
spring. There were at least three fledglings from this group for sure. Last
season, there was a nest in an abandoned building close to downtown
Mooresville, NC (right beside an active railroad track unfortunately). I had
to remove one of the fledglings from the track because it was unable to fly
out of the ravine the tracks ran through. Both of these nests were in an
opening at the
top of the building just big enough for a kestrel to move through.
Other places which I used to see hunting kestrels have been devoid of them
this year, or at least not in the same area. These are usually along
roadsides near large fields - maybe they have moved elsewhere or failed to
return this year for whatever reason. On another note, the Summer Tanagers
that have nested near my home for the past three seasons did not return this
year either! However, the Yellow-billed Cuckoos seem to always show up.
