Lake Hartwell Great Blue Heron Rookery

Some friends live on Lake Hartwell off SC 187 somewhat near the Eighteen
Mile Creek landing. This is at the edge of Anderson County near Pendleton.
Neighbors had pointed out to them a Great Blue Heron Rookery on a small
island.

They took us out June 17 for a brief look (between storms) on their boat. It
was quite a treat for us. There appeared to be 5 to 8 active nests in the
tops of pine trees.

The island is in a busy area of the lake. It is in a group of three islands,
and a loud party was going on another one. We think the rookery must be
across from the Eighteen Mile Creek landing.

We were wondering if this rookery has been documented, and if so, how long
it has been in use? Is it fairly unusual for this area?
