Hello, this is an August 3 update of the Carolina Rare Bird Alert featuring
birding news from North and South Carolina sponsored by the Carolina Bird
Club. Highlights on this report include :
ROSEATE SPOONBILLS
WHITE -WINGED DOVE
EURASIAN COLLARED - DOVE
WHITE-TAILED TROPICBIRDS
FEA'S PETREL
Upcoming offshore birding opportunities
ROSEATE SPOONBILLS can be seen in both Carolinas right now. A bird has been
present at Pea Island NWR since late May. This bird is most likely to be seen
at Newfield, which is just south of North Pond. View the area from the south
dike of North Pond. In South Carolina, a ROSEATE SPOONBILL has been seen at
Kiawah Island at Ibis Pond on Ocean Course Drive.
A WHITE- WINGED DOVE continues to be seen and heard in Beaufort, NC. Look
around the intersection of Ann and Live Oak Sts. in Beaufort.
A EURASIAN COLLARED-DOVE visited a feeder in Kill Devil Hills, NC on July 15.

Brian Patteson's late July offshore birding produced 2 WHITE-TAILED
TROPICBIRDS on the 15th along with FEA'S PETREL and MANX SHEARWATER. Good
numbers of BLACK-CAPPED PETRELS and BAND-RUMPED STORM PETRELS are usually
seen on all Gulf Stream trips. Other commonly encountered species include
AUDUBON'S SHEARWATERS, GREATER SHEARWATERS, CORY'S SHEARWATERS, BRIDLED
TERNS, SOOTY TERNS, LEACH'S STORM -PETREL, POMARINE , PARASITIC , and
LONG-TAILED JAEGERS. Brian has scheduled more offshore birding trips
including special two-day packages to look for the very rare WHITE-FACED
STORM PETREL. One- day Gulf Stream trips will be out of Hatteras on Aug. 5,
6, 26, 27, Sept. 9, 10. and Manteo on Aug. 12, 19, Sept. 4. White -faced
storm petrel trips are Aug. 13-14, 20-21, and Sept. 2-3. Call Brian Patteson
at 252- 986- 1363 between 7 and 9 PM for details on how to get on one of
these boats.
FOCUS ON NATURE Tours also provides offshore birding opportunities in NC. On
July 31 they located a FEA'S PETREL and SOUTH POLAR SKUAS July 29, 30 31., as
well as most more commonly encountered species. FONT will be going offshore
