Finally there was something of interest at the Sandhills Turf Farm in
Candor. There was a lone Golden Plover with the flock of 100+
Killdeers. The plover still had a trace of black on its belly. Horned
Larks were also present.
Birds were quite active during the week, but I didn't pick up any
migrants of interest. As elsewhere, this has been a good year for
hummingbirds. We've had more activity at our feeder than in any of our
previous seven years in Pinehurst.
In the past, Reservoir Park in Southern Pines has never been
particularly birdy. About a year ago a prescribed burn was executed on
a tract on the southeast side of the reservoir. That tract now has a
healthy population of birds typical Longleaf Pine woodlands.
