I went in search of the Masked Booby at Oregon Inlet on the afternoon of
9/24/00, walked out on the beach behind the groin field and the Masked Booby
was sitting and preening among some Great Black-Backed Gulls (1:00 pm). It
flew off, put on quite a display and settled back down by itself near the tip
of the groin. It was there for 15 minutes, flew off toward the inlet itself
close to the water and below the groin and I never saw it again.
I also saw a Jaeger and I believe it to be a Long-tailed, but my id skills
are not good with immature jaegers. This bird was sleek, long wings, and
reminded me of a Merlin, so I guess this just has to be a Jaeger spp. It was
harassing terns in the same area and was around most of the afternoon.
