Ducks arrive

Ducks have begun to arrive in the Raleigh area as evidenced by 3 N. Shovelers at
the NCSU dairy unit pond, 3 Ring-necked Ducks at West Lake Pond, and 5
Ring-necks and 2 Ruddys, at Lake Crabtree (Crabtree had a Ruddy and some Lesser
Scaup about a week ago as well). The NCSU dairy unit also provided quite a
spectacle as an estimated thousand cowbirds took a communal bath in the shallow
end of the pond. Also noted at the farm: 1st winter White-crowned Sparrow, Palm
Warbler, several Kestrels.
