Hello, this is a June 18 update of the Carolina Rare Bird Alert featuring
birding news from North and South Carolina sponsored by the Carolina Bird
Club. Highlights on this report include:
BLACK-WHISKERED VIREO
PURPLE GALLINULE
BAND-TAILED PIGEON
SCISSOR-TAILED FLYCATCHERS
BOBOLINKS
RED CROSSBILLS
The BLACK-WHISKERED VIREO at Bald Head Island in NC has been relocated at a
different spot than where originally seen. Many birders saw it June 15
through today June 18 at Wood Duck Ct. and Bufflehead Ct. Access to Bald Head
Island is by passenger ferry only (15 $ charge round trip) departing from
Southport, NC at Indigo Plantation. Once on the island, rent a golf cart or
walk to the location. Previously the BLACK-WHISKERED VIREO was seen at the
intersection of Bay Tree Trail and Stede Bonnett Tr.
A PURPLE GALLINULE continues to be seen at Sunset Beach, NC . Call Mary
McDavit at 910-579-2446 for updates.
Two BAND-TAILED PIGEONS were heard (and recorded ) June 16 at the Devil's
Courthouse area of the Blue Ridge Parkway in NC. There is a trail from the
parking area to the overlook; the birds were heard along this trail. Birders
visiting this spot to look for the nesting Peregrine falcons should be on the
lookout for the pigeons. There are only 2 or 3 records of this species from
NC, at least one of which is from the mountains.
A pair of BOBOLINKS were seen in a hayfield in Allegheny County NC on June
17. Perhaps this species is breeding in Allegheny County. Interested birders
can contact Harrol Blevins at <kestrel@valink.com> for directions.
The SCISSOR-TAILED FLYCATCHERS nesting south of Monroe NC apparently will
fledge 3 young very soon. The birds may be more difficult to see after that.
From US 74 in Monroe take the Hwy. 200 south exit. When 200 turns right in
Monroe STAY STRAIGHT. you will be on Hayne st. (Hwy. 207) Stay on 207 through
town and several miles south to where 207 turns right (Wolf Pond Rd.) Go
about 3.5 miles and look for signs indicating the flycatcher's location.
RED CROSSBILLS have been easy to see around Mt. Mitchell (NC). From the Blue
Ridge Parkway check from Balsam Gap to SR 128 which connects the parkway to
Mt. Mitchell S. P. CROSSBILLS are often seen along 128 and at the Mt.
Mitchell Restaurant as well.
Thanks this week to Greg Massey, Harrol Blevins, Michael Boustead, and Robin
Carter for their calls and reports. Some of this information was gleaned from
carolinabirds.
