Re: High tide at Fort Fisher

These are good points about the full moon high tide and
the offshore storm (Olga) which has been sending
larger than average size swells in to the Southeast coast.

The astronomical tide Saturday morning will be a higher
than average high tide.

BUT-- the tides listed below appear to be for the Wilmington
harbor area, far upriver.

I don't have listed tides for the Wilmington area, but the time
of the ocean beach high tide on Saturday morning for
Atlantic Beach is right at 7am. If I remember correctly,
the ocean beach in the Fort Fisher area lags a little bit
behind this, maybe about 15 minutes. I would guess that
the time of the high tide on the ocean beach at Fort Fisher
on Saturday will be about 7:15am, maybe as late as 7:30.

After having written this, I remember another angle. If I
remember correctly, the very beginning of the ORV trail
can get tidal flooding from the Cape Fear River during
higher than average tides (it used to anyway). The time
that this could occur would be later than the ocean beach
high tide, in the 9am range, maybe later. (The farther you
go up the estuary, the more variable and unpredictable the
exact times of tides becomes.)

I've always been intrigued by areas where the times of high
and low tides can be very different among sites in close
proximity. Shorebirds love this situation. It gives them
more feeding opportunities.

Perhaps someone from the Wilmington area would like
to add to this.
