Today (Oct. 18) five of us visited the spot near Charlotte where the
Common Ground-Dove was seen on Wednesday Oct. 16, but didn't find the
bird.
Some of the more interesting birds we saw included a Loggerhead Shrike,
12+ Palm Warblers, a nice Bobolink, 1 Indigo Bunting, and 3 White-crowned
Sparrows (along with Song, Swamp, Savannah, White-throated, Field, and
Chipping Sparrows).
The best sighting of the day was of 2 Dainty Sulphurs, a very rare stray
butterfly from further west and south. This was our other target species
of the day -- about 5 were seen on 10/16. A state butterfly for all of
us, lifer for most. I'll post the other butterflies on Carolinaleps
http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/CARL.html
Best tree sighting was of a flock of Chalk Maples (Acer leucoderme) along
the powerline edge to the right of the old barn.
It was a nice day, even though we missed the taget bird.
