The previously reported King Eider (hen) was at the coquina rock outcropping
just north of the Ft. Fisher (New Hanover cty, NC) historical site yesterday
afternoon. The bird was within 20 feet of shore at one point, thus
affording great views.
Tracy and I took a swing by the local ponds and lakes this morning. The
numbers of ducks were down, but then again some of the smaller ponds froze
over, pushing their ducks elsewhere.
1010 Pond- 147 Ring-necks, 4 Am. Wigeon, 10 Bufflehead, 1 Mallard
West Lake Ponds- 26 Am Wigeon, 3 Gadwall, 4 Canvasback, 3 Ring-neck, 3
Bufflehead, 32 Hooded Merganser
NCSU Dairy- 13 Ruddy, 7 N. Shoveler, 1 Bufflehead, 1 Lesser Scaup
Lake Wheeler- 17 Green-winged Teal, 12 Am Black Duck (at least one a hybrid
black/mallard drake), 22 Ruddy, 8 Bufflehead, 3 Mallard, 4 Pied-billed Grebe
Greenview Pond- no ducks (still mainly frozen)
Also enjoyed nice looks at American Pipits feeding in the pastures at NCSU
dairy. The fields are cropped closely this year, so pipit watching should
continue to be successful.
Have a great week!
