The following are the highlights of the Charleston County Parks birdwalk to
Huntington Beach State Park led on January 16, 2003 by Perry Nugent.
86 species were seen and/or heard by one or more of the 9 participants on a
cold, but nice day. The most interesting were; 20 Common Loon, 4 Northern
Shovelers, 20 Gadwalls, 10 American Wigeon, 15 Redheads, 2 Ring-necked
Ducks, 20 Lesser Scaup, 1 Long-tailed Duck, 25 Black Scoters, 1 Surf Scoter,
1 Common Golden-eye, 30 Buffleheads, 40 Hooded Mergansers, 20 Red-breasted
Mergansers, 20 Ruddy Ducks, 1 first year Bald Eagle, 1 Northern Harrier, 2
Sharp-shinned Hawks, 1 Cooper's Hawk, 4 Red-tailed Hawks, 1 American
Kestrel, 1 Merlin, 1 Peregrine Falcon, 4 Black-bellied Plovers, 6
Semipalmated Plovers, 7 Piping Plovers, 4 Killdeer, 2 American
Oystercatchers, 70 Ruddy Turnstones, 10 Red Knots, 1 Bonaparte's Gull, 1
Greater Black-backed Gull, 2 Cave Swallows, 1 Orange-crowned Warbler, and 1
Palm Warbler.
