Trip to Bear Island and Donnelley SWR



The following are highlights of an all day birding trip to Bear Island and
Donnelley State Wildlife refugees in Green Pond, SC led by Perry Nugent.

95 species were seen and/or heard by most of the 10 participants on a cold
day where water was frozen.  There were large numbers of many common
species.  The most interesting were; 18 White Pelicans, 40 Great Blue
Herons, 350 Great Egrets, 400 Snowy Egrets, 100 Little Blue Herons, 150
Tricolored Herons, 300 White Ibis 40 Glossy ibis, 420 Tundra Swans ( actual
count with scope ), 1000 Wood Ducks, 75 Blue-winged Teal, 100 Green-winged
Teal, 750 Ring-necked Ducks, 30 Lesser Scaup, 1 male Bufflehead, 250 Hooded
Mergansers, 3 adult and 1 first year Bald Eagles, 3 American Kestrels, 1
Merlin, 10 Black-bellied Plovers, 120 Killdeers, 20 Greater Yellowlegs, 2
Lesser Yellowlegs, 75 Dunlins, 150 Short-billed Dowitchers, 4 Bonapartes
Gulls, 1 Great Horned Owl on old eagle nest across from Crooked Creek gate,
20 Belted Kingfishers, 3 Pileated Woodpeckers, 200 Tree Swallows, 3
White-breasted Nuthatches, 20 Brown-headed Nuthatches, 2 House Wrens, 1
Winter Wren, 2 Marsh Wrens, 125 Eastern Bluebirds, 10 Hermit Thrushes, 3
American Pipits, 25 Eastern Towhees, 150 Chipping Sparrows, 10 Savannah
Sparrows, 3 Fox Sparrows, 30 Song Sparrows, 45 Swamp Sparrows, 100
White-throated Sparrows, and 250 Northern Cardinals.
