RE: I-40 bird kills--Raleigh

First of all, thanks to Deniz Aygen for alerting us earlier today (28 Jan 2003) to the robin roadkill problem in Raleigh. Additional thanks to Harry Davis for forwarding the info to the powers-that-be in South Carolina (see below).

All of us should heap tons of praise on Timothy Edwards for his concern and open-minded response, for considering alternatives to fruit-bearing plantings along South Carolina's state highways, and for passing the info to his designers.

It might not work as well everywhere, but perhaps a simple e-mail or letter to each state's Office of Beautification Programs could have a similar positive effect and save countless birds.

Harry, please let Timothy Edwards know that as least one other person in South Carolina appreciates his attitude. :-)

Happy Nature Watching,

BILL

I sent a note to the South Carolina DOT with a link to the article and
received this response:

Harry Davis-Thank you for providing me the link to the article
concerning thorny elaeagnus and bird kill. I was not aware of this
problem. The amount of thorny elaeagnus planted on SC rights of way is
minimal and I printed out
the article to show to my designers. I have used it in front of noise
barriers in the past but the bird kill photo convinced me to use
substitutes. There are other shrunb that can be substituted for thorny
elaeagnus. Thanks,
Timothy Edwards
