For birders in or near Buncombe and Henderson counties in WNC, the Elisha
Mitchell Audubon Society is meeting at the Botanical Gardens of Asheville
this Tuesday, 18 March. The Gardens are located in north Asheville next to
UNCA on W.T. Weaver Blvd. at the corner of Broadway. You can get there via
19/23, exiting at UNCA, or from downtown via Merrimon or Broadway. The
meeting starts at 7 pm, and light refreshments are provided. Please join us!

The title of the slide program is:
Impacts of wetland restoration on bird populations at Tulula Wetland, Graham
County, NC

The presenter, Reed Rossell, is a Research Associate in the Environmental
Studies Department
at UNCA who specializes in wildlife. He has been studying habitat
associations and population trends of breeding birds at Tulula Wetland in
Graham County for nine years. Since intensive restoration on the stream
channel was begun at that site, Reed has documented a dramatic shift in bird
populations. He will present an overview of the birds of Tulula and the
changes taking place there. He'll also talk about his research on the
Golden-winged Warbler, a beautiful species of high conservation concern
under status
assessment for federal listing. Reed is well-known to EMAS members as an
interesting speaker, as well as a former EMAS board member. In addition to
his duties at UNCA, Reed is a self-employed Contract Biologist, and has been
working for EMAS to eradicate exotic invasive plants at Beaver Lake Bird
Sanctuary.
