Ricky is being rather modest as to the historical significance of a Spring
(through the end of June) inland sighting of Red Phalarope in either of the
Carolinas.

Of the 15 inland (away from counties on the immediate coast) sightings of
Red Phalarope of which I am aware, only 1 was in the Spring: May 2, 1985 at
Pendleton, SC. Red Phalarope feathers were also found in a Peregrine Falcon
nest near Linville Gorge, NC in the Spring of 1987 --- presumably that
unfortunate(?) phalarope was also an inland Spring migrant. Single birds at
2 different locations on the same day? "Very unusual"? Ha! I think we should
pop open a bottle of champagne and toast Ricky's talent for being at the
right places at the right times!

There are at least 12 inland Red-necked Phalarope reports from the Spring,
out of at least 38 inland reports. Of interest is the fact that 8 of the 38
came from one location: Goldsboro, NC.

12 of the 55 inland Wilson's Phalarope reports I know of were in the Spring,
and yes, once again Goldsboro, NC comes out the big winner with at least 13
of those 55 reports.

A phalarope sp. was observed at Jordan Lake, NC on June 4, 1986, and is not
included in any of the earlier "analysis" in this e-mail.

My usual caveat: there certainly could be other reports of which I know
nothing about and this only covers about the last 50 years.
