Birders,
Swung over to The Ridge as I made my way back down from ND to NC for the fall
and winter(all the Nodaks laugh here). Picked up my life Goshawk and
unexpectedly another lifer in Lapland Longspur. The single greatest thing about Hawk
Ridge, other than the sheer numbers of birds, is their proximity to the
observers. The birds pass right down along the ridge, usually quite low and give
great looks.
One of the more interesting moments in my two day visit there was the
opportunity given me by one of the seasonal naturalists to release a trapped juvy
Goshawk (after banding of course). I eagerly agreed and about 3 seconds after
doing so, a Peregrine flew in out of nowhere and buzzed the Gos and its new
jewelry. Saw 16 Balds in one day! Many Sharpies were moving through also.
For raptor enthusiasts, a trip to Duluth is a no-brainer and I would highly
recommend it. Those manning the site are highly professional and very
knowledgable about raptors in general.
