Caw Caw birdwalks



The following are highlights of the 3 hour birdwalks at Charleston County's
Caw Caw Park which is located on US highway 17 in Ravenel, SC about 10 miles
south of the intersection of US 17 and US 526.  It is led by Perry Nugent at
8:30 am. A small fee is charged.  For more information click on

October 4, 2003

61 species were seen and/or heard on a nice cool day.  The most interesting
were; 50 White Ibis, 100+ Wood Storks, 1 Osprey, 2 Adult Bald Eagles, 1
Sharp-shinned Hawk, 2 Red-Shoudered Hawks, 1 Merlin, 2 Common Snipe, 1 Hairy
Woodpecker, 6 Pileated Woodpeckers, 1 Acadian Woodpecker, 5 Marsh Wrens, 8
White Eyed Vireos, 3 Northern Parula Warblers, 2 Pine Warblers, 20 Palm
Warblers, 1 Black-and-white Warbler, 4 Northern Waterthrushes, 6 American
Yellowstarts, 2 Indigo Buntings, 3 Painted Buntings, and 1 Bobolink.

October 15, 2003

50 species on a nice windy day.  The most interesting were; 130+ Wood
Storks, 1 Osprey, 1 Adult Bald Eagle, 3 Northern Harriers, 3 Sharp-shinned
Hawks, 2 Cooper's Hawks, 4 Red-Shouldered Hawks, 1 Red-tailed Hawk, 1 Broad
Winged Hawk, 3 American Kestrels, 1 Yellow-bellied Sapsucker, 10 Northern
Flickers, 10 Eastern Phoebes, 100+ Tree Swallows, 1 House Wren, 10 Palm
Warblers, 1 Northern Waterthrush, 3 Common Yellowthroats, 1 Indigo bunting,
and 5 Eastern Meadow Larks.

October 16, 2003

Although there is no official bird walk on Thursdays, there were many birds
migrating from about 9:00-11:15 am.  The most interesting were; 9 White
Pelicans, 200+ Wood Storks, 4 Ospreys, 2 adult ( working on nest ) and 3
young ( harassing the Ospreys ) Bald Eagles, 6 Sharp-shinned Hawks, 1
Coopers Hawk, 4 Red-shouldered Hawks, 3 American Kestrels, 1 Sandhill Crane,
75+ Black Vultures, 50+ Turkey Vultures, 2 Common Snipe,  and 10 Eastern
Meadowlarks.
