Caw Caw birdwalks



The following are highlights of the 3 hour birdwalks at Charleston County's
Caw Caw Park which is located on US 17 in Ravenel, SC about 10 miles south
of the intersection of US 17 and US 5526.  They are led by Perry Nugent each
Wednesday and Saturday at 8:30 am.  A small fee is charged.  For more

October 25, 2003

63 species were seen and/or heard on a nice day.  The most interesting were;
3 Pied-billed Grebes, 15 Wood Storks, 40 Wood Ducks, 2 Ospreys, 1 adult and
1 young Bald Eagles, 1 Northern Harrier, 3 Sharp-shinned Hawks, 1 Cooper's
Hawk, 6 Red-shouldered Hawks, 1 American Kestrel, 1 Merlin, 1 Solitary
Sandpiper, 30 Common Snipe, 2 Yellow-bellied Sapsuckers, 300 Tree Swallows,
1 House Wren, 5 Sedge Wrens, 3 Marsh Wrens, 12 Ruby-crowned Kinglets, 1
Hermit Thrush, 1 Loggerhead Shrike, 1 White-eyed Vireo, 1 Northern Parula
Warbler, 50+ Yellow-rumped Warblers ( butter buts ), 20 Palm Warblers, 4
Indigo Buntings, 1 Eastern Towhee, 15 Savannah Sparrows, 30 Swamp Sparrows,
10 Song Sparrows, and 1 Eastern Meadowlark.

October 29, 2003

54 species were seen and/or heard on a nice day.  The most interesting were;
1 American Bittern ( fly over then on the edge of water at 8-10 feet ), 3
Ospreys, 1 adult Bald Eagle, 1 Sharp-shinned Hawk, 4 Red-shouldered Hawks,
50 Greater Yellowlegs, 6 Common Snipe, 1 Barred Owl, 8 Yellow-bellied
Sapsuckers, 5 Carolina Wrens, 3 House Wrens, 4 Sedge Wrens, 10 Marsh Wrens,
5 Ruby-crowned Kinglets, 2 Hermit Thrushes, 1 White-eyed Vireo, 30 Palm
Warblers, 3 young Indigo Buntings, 20 Savannah Sparrows, 30 Swamp Sparrows,
20 Song Sparrows, and 30 Eastern Meadowlarks.

November 1, 2003

57 species were seen and/or heard on a nice day.  The most interested were;
2 Glossy Ibis, 5 Wood Storks, 1 Osprey, 1 adult Bald Eagle, 2 Northern
Harriers, 1 Sharp-shinned Hawk, 1 Red-shouldered Hawk, 1 Red-tailed Hawk, 1
American Kestrel, 1 Common Snipe, 4 Pileated Woodpeckers, 4 Yellow-bellied
Sapsuckers, 1000 Tree Swallows, 4 House wrens, 3 Marsh Wrens, 1 Loggerhead
Shrike, 1 White-eyed Vireo, 1 young Indigo Bunting, and 4 Eastern
Meadowlarks.
