Regarding Sri Rama Ramanujacharya's point-
"Please note Manu - "yas
tarkena anusandhatta sa dharma veda netara" - Dharma
is discerned
through
investigation based upon discursive reasoning - there
is no other way."
I would submit that the verse should not be read in
isolation. The first stanza of the verse says-
"A'rsham dharmopades'am ca veda s'a'stra avirodhina'"
[What is consistant with the teachings of Rishis and
guidance to the right path, what is not repugnant to
Vedas and Sastras].
The next stanza of the verse, quoted by the learned
Bhagavata, no doubt, puts the above principles to the
test of reasoning, but it does not seem to mean that
the reasoned verdict should overthrow Vedic and
Sastric injunctions. A harmonious interpretation of
the full verse would justify a conclusion that
reasoning exercise should be within the ambit of hoary
teachings and guidance of Vedas and Sastras.
This comment is strictly in respect of the verse
quoted from Manusmriti and not about the other points
made in the posting.
