UNI Project - Trujillo

Dr. Julio C. Vasques Vargas Project Director, Dental School of Trujillo National University, Trujillo, Peru
The Medical Sciences School has three professional schools: Medicine, Nursing and Dentistry. Dentistry has participated in the protect since its beginning. Dr. Gustavo Guardia directs the line of Complementary Projects related to community participation and improving the quality of life, by generating jobs in Moche. The UNI-Project is within the conceptual guidelines of the school.

Academic Component

1. Students - There are a total of 54 students in different levels. Each year fifteen new students arrive.

2. Teachers - Professors from other schools teach Basic Sciences, making it difficult to provide guidance for each course in accordance with concepts of the curriculum. The school has eleven full-time teachers, all with a bachelor's degree. Only one of them has a specialty in Pediatric Dentistry. The curriculum designates more than 50% of its credits for community work; one teacher is responsible for the first integrated course of the three careers offered by the school.

3. Infra-structure - Infra-structure is shared with other schools; the teaching-service clinic is located within the ambit of the Project.

4. Information and Communication system - The British Council donated a small library that covers basic science and clinical subject areas. The school has acquired a number of texts in Spanish. There are no resources to subscribe to journals but there is access to BIREME, MEDLINE and LILACS.

5. Economy - The school has no budget of its own. Its budgetary endowments are included in the Medical Sciences School budget, which precludes making student/year cost estimates.

6. Curriculum - The program uses an integral, spiraled curriculum which is oriented toward the community.

Services Component

The services are non-integrated and treatment oriented, free on demand. Care is generally of low quality and is expensive; in addition, there is no system for referrals related to levels of assistance. Clinic hours are inadequate and coverage is scarce, with overbooked scheduling for some populations.

Community Participation Component

1. Localization and limits - Moche is situated 7 km to the southwest of the city of Trujillo.

2. Historical landmark - Moche is the birth of Mochica-Chimu monarchy and is believed to have been founded in 1534.

Infra-structure and Equipment

1. Means of Communication - The Panamerican Highway connects Moche with Trujillo and Lima; a network of paved and unpaved roads provide other transportation and communications.

2. Principal Economic Activities - agriculture and cattle raising, along with small-scale fishing and commerce.

Population

Population - 16,420 inhabitants

Number of families - 1,934
