Editors: Pico, Emacs, and Vi
Most UNIX text editors share the following traits:
- They are driven by keyboard commands and not by point-and-click graphical user
interfaces (GUIs).
- They are very simple and are for plain text editing purposes.
- They are either loved or hated--few people have mixed feelings about text editors.
To run a text editor, simply enter its name at the UNIX prompt and it opens with a new,
empty file. To edit a specific text file, enter the name of the text editor followed by a
space and the name of the file. (For example, to edit "index.html" in Vi, enter vi
index.html at the UNIX prompt.).
