USS Bennington (Gunboat # 4) --
Following Her 1901-1903 Refit

During her career, USS Bennington was refitted several times, generally with relatively modest changes to her appearance. One modification, made in 1893-1894, added an enclosed pilothouse atop her bridge and a searchlight on a small platform in front of her foremast. These two features were removed, along with her mainmast, while Bennington was out of commission at the Mare Island Navy Yard, California, between early September 1901 and early March 1903. Two tall ventilation cowls, immediately behind the bridge, were installed at this time. These alterations make it relatively easy to recognize photographs taken during Bennington's final two years of active service.

This page features all the images we have of USS Bennington (Gunboat # 4) after she was refitted with a two-mast rig in 1901-1903.
