Lighthouses of China: Wēihǎi Area (Eastern Shāndōng)

The People's Republic of China (中华, Zhōnghuá in Chinese) has a lengthy coastline, many large harbors, and a large number of lighthouses. During the colonial period of the late 19th and early 20th centuries Western powers occupied a number of locations in China and built lighthouses, many of which survive. In more recent years the People's Republic has developed modern ports throughout the country and built many lighthouses to serve them.

The country is divided into 23 provinces and 11 other province-level regions of various special types. Shāndōng (formerly spelled Shantung) is a province of northern China lying directly across the Yellow Sea (Huáng Hǎi) from South Korea. The province includes the Shāndōng Peninsula (Shāndōng Bandǎo), which separates the Yellow Sea from the Bohai Sea (Bó Hǎi). As a result the province has long coastlines facing north on the Bohai Sea and southeast on the Yellow Sea.

Shāndōng is divided into sixteen prefectural-level cities. This page includes lighthouses of the prefectural-level city of Wēihǎi, which occupies the eastern end of the peninsula. Also included are lighthouses in the county-level city of Hǎiyáng southwest of Wēihǎi on the south coast of the prefectural-level city of Yāntái.

Because of its strategic location and fine ports, the Shāndōng Peninsula was a target for foreign penetration during the colonial period. The urban area of Wēihǎi was a leased British territory known as Wei-Hai-Wei from 1898 to 1930, and Yāntái also had a large European presence. The entire province was occupied by Japan during World War II (1938-1945).

There are many languages and dialects spoken in China, but Standard Chinese, often called Mandarin, is official. The pīnyīn system for transliterating Chinese into Latin characters is now the international standard but some locations continue to be known also under the spellings of older transliteration systems. The Chinese word for a lighthouse is dēngtǎ (灯塔). In Standard Chinese jiāo (formerly chiao) is a reef or rock, jiǎo is a cape or headland, dǎo (tao) is an island; (tsu) or tuózi ("lump") is a small island, hǎi is a sea, wān is a bay, hǎixiá is a strait, or jiāng is a river, hékǒu ("river mouth") is an estuary, and gǎng (kang) is a harbor.

Lighthouses in China are maintained by the PRC Maritime Safety Administration. The administration is organized in four regional administrations; Shāndōng lighthouses fall under the Tiānjīn MSA and its district office at Yāntái.

ARLHS numbers are from the ARLHS World List of Lights. CN numbers are Chinese light list numbers. Admiralty numbers are from volume P of the Admiralty List of Lights & Fog Signals. U.S. NGA List numbers are from Publication 112.

Wēihǎi Prefecture Lighthouses

Wēihǎi City (Huáncuì District) Lighthouses
Wēihǎi is a port near the eastern tip of the Shāndōng Peninsula. In 1898, after Russia occupied Lüshun (Port Arthur) on the other side of the Bohai Gulf, Britain secured a lease of the Wēihǎi area as a competing naval base. The British occupied the territory, known as Wei-hai-wei (Wēihǎi Garrison), until 1930.

Shi Jiangchuan has a street view and Google has a satellite view. The 2016 Chinese list describes a much shorter metal tower. The Shipyard Pier is now a public pier; moored alongside is a replica of the battleship Dìngyuǎn, the flagship of the Chinese Navy during the Sino-Japanese War of 1894-95. Site open, tower closed. CN-1530; Admiralty P3871.5.
Qígānzuǐ (Qigan Zui, Flagstaff Point) (3)
1976 (station established 1898). Active; focal plane 23.5 m (77 ft); white flash every 12 s. 11 m (36 ft) round cylindrical concrete tower, attached to a 1-story equipment building. Lighthouse painted white. A photo is at right and Google has a satellite view. This light station replaced an 1890 lighthouse built nearby on Observatory Island; that light had been destroyed in the Sino-Japanese War of 1894-95. The 1898 lighthouse, built by the British for the Chinese Maritime Customs Department, was a short wrought iron tower with a focal plane of 16 m (53 ft). It was destroyed by Japanese naval gunfire in 1945. A skeletal tower replaced it in 1951. It appears that the original keeper's houses of the station survive. Located on a steep-sided rock in an area recently redeveloped. Site status unknown. ARLHS PRC-052; CN-1531; Admiralty P3871; NGA 18624.

This small lighthouse, prefabricated in France by Sauter, Lemonnier & Cie., was installed during the British occupation of Wēihǎi. A Wēihǎi Daily photo is at right and Huelse has a historic postcard view. Google's satellite view shows heavy construction of new port facilities in the area surrounding the lighthouse but the lighthouse is protected from this development. It appears that the keeper's house shown in Huelse's view has been demolished. The lighthouse was dismantled during the Sino-Japanese War of 1894-95 and then reassembled. The British lighthouse was destroyed during World War II. The clamshell Fresnel lens of the British lighthouse was stored during the war and is on display at the Qínhuángdǎo lighthouse in Héběi province. Naturally the site commands a wide view of the Yellow Sea (Huánghǎi). Accessible by road. Site open; the tower may also be open but we have no details on this.
