Hi Thomas -

Bacteria are not normally found in plant xylem. I've stared at enough plant sap to know. The paper reporting bacteria entering plant tissue is an exceptional case, because of the conditions to which the plants were subjected. If you abuse plants, or humans, long enough and strangely enough, you will get bizarre behavior.

But, prove it to yourself that bacteria are not normally found in plant juices, or in the surfaces of plant leaf tissues.

To see bacteria, you have to have EITHER oil immersion, 1000X or greater phase contrast objectives and a phase condenser, OR a 400X DIC microscope.

Both cost about $9000 for a good one. You might be able to go a your local University and get one of the microbiologists to do some looking for you, for a minimal price.
