Re: [compost_tea] Re: MICROBIOLOGY TESTING of COMPOST TEAS

The following labs were suggested as doing microbiology, but no explanation
of what approaches they use were given in the person's e-mail. So, here's
the information you need to know. .

Plate count methods are typically done by most land grant Universities. If
the University has a plant testing lab, they usually do plate counts, so
there's no need to go that far afield for these testing services.

Alternatively, water treatment plants have plate count labs associated with
them, so again, investigate that as a possible place to get some plate count
work done.
--------------------------------

The following lab uses direct methods, but when samples were sent to
university labs with people doing direct counts (e.g., Colorado State University,
University of Georgia), and to SFI, ABC numbers did not come anywhere close to
what the other labs obtained. The other labs all came very close (less than
5% variability) in their measurements, while ABC values were significantly
outside what anyone else obtained.

SFI has sent samples to other labs doing direct methods, to see who is doing
adequate assessment using the methods Dr. Ingham developed from classical
microscope methods. Sample data from SFI has agreed with University
researchers using these methods in nearly all cases. SFI labs all over the world do
quality assurance assessments with every 100th sample coming into the lab, and
agreement is nearly 100% across all labs on all samples run at the same time.
If agreement is not within 5% variability, the technician returns to
training to make certain all assessments produce the same values, and that control
assessments are always correct. The same cannot be said for people who do
not have quality assurance programs. When considering labs, ask about how they
check the quality of their assessments.

The following lab does plate count methods, as well as PLFA testing.

The rest of these labs are strictly plate count method labs.

The following company doesn't do their own plate counts, they send them out
to another lab, listed above, to have them done. Cheaper and faster to work
through the actual lab.
