You need to improve SOIL chemistry, and biology too.

As Albrecht pointed out, and Arden Anderson more recently, many things get blamed on worms that aren't worms at all.  Soft heart, or browing in the middle of fruit is usually a calcium limitation.  No different for apples than many other things!

So, best bet, without having actually looked at the fruit, would be to use a compost high in calcium as an application around the roots of the apple.  Core down, spray with a good ACT with VAM spores, re-fill the compost core with a mix of 70% sand, 30% FUNGAL compost.

OK?
