In that case, for it to be done properly, then I would even go so far
as to suggest that there should be several types of controls, with the
necessity to run it as a multi-year study.
But there is also a lot of garbage that passes peer-review, so it
would not really be necessary, just they way you should do it if you
want to really figure out what is going on.
Just for reference, I live in western Washington, on a half wooded
lot. The lawn in question runs right up to wooded areas in several
places, and we get plenty of rain. The biology didn't have to go far.
The lawn that I ignored when I lived in California did not do anywhere
near as well.
