Re: Videos in University Archives

Ms. Cooper: Here are two thoughts from an old university archivist
who is both a CRM and a CA. If you can do it, arrange for the
athletic department to manage their own records. Sports teams
generate many records and documents, such as your tapes,
whose contents require specialized knowledge. If you are as
stressed for time and resources as the rest of us, beware that this
stuff can eat your life.

The second suggestion has to do with av material in general.
Others will feel differently, but I think that non-paper records should
be managed by the office that has the hardware and technical staff
to display them. In practice, this usually means the AudioVisual
Services Department, whatever it is currently called.

Often, you can offer to assist these places with expertise in
arranging and documenting their records. That will sometimes
encourage them to see the value of keeping specialized records
themselves.
