Re: jobs

Jamie,

Having just graduated from a Master's program in public history & just
getting a "real" job, I can honestly say that ANY experience in the
field is what makes the difference both in financial aid possibilities
for
school as well as getting a "real" job. I have had a prof. tell me that
because of the number of internships on my resume/application they
could tell I was dedicated to the field I had chosen and that because of
my innitiative in getting field experience, they could tell I would be
successful in getting a job when I graduated (successful alums are
good PR for grad schools). The job I have now is due to the field
experience I sought out while in school, as well as being an aware
member of professional organizations (local & national) that went to
workshops and conferences to gain knowledge in my field.

While I did not study specifically to work in an archives, I have found
that
with enough innitiative, people can find places to gain experience in
their
field. Remember - you have a one-up on regular volunteers: you are
familiar with the very basics of archival practices (wear gloves & be
careful, don't do what you can't undo, etc.). Smaller institutions or
educational archives might welcome someone like you. But be aware,
most of the opportunities will most likely not be paid.

Sorry to babble, but hope it helped.
