Ozone is of great concern because of the damage it can do to collections in
museums, archives and libraries. Typical damage includes, corrosion in
metals, discoloration, fading or colour change in pigmnents, cracking of
rubber, fading and colour change in textile dyes. Although electrostatic
precipitators are effective at removing particulates from the air they also
create ozone as a by-product and that is why they are never recommended for
use in museums and archives unless an activated carbon filter is added to
capture the ozone.
