Re: Terms in use - "Archives"

My questions exactly! Didn't we just have a Friday discussion not too long ago about being mistaken for archeologists, etc.? As for substituting, this reminds me of what is happening in the field formerly known as "library science," now called "information science." (I'm very put out that the school I graduated from, formerly a SLIS, removed "library" from its name and is now just a school of information science). I don't hear very many people saying "I need to do some research; guess I'll go over to the public information science center."

Speaking of name problems, a recent obituary in the local paper apparently had information from the funeral home that the person in question was a "ref. librarian," and it came out in the obit. as "referee librarian." Now there's a concept! I'm sure some of the larger public information science centers could use some of those!

My question is "For whom have the terms 'archives' & 'archival' lost
meaning?" What terms do they propose to substitute? I'll not be called a
'paper pusher', that's for sure! :) The standards committee needs to
remember that slang is a very fluid language, and any short-term misuse of
the words will blow over long before they can agree on suitable
replacements. :) In any case, why should we cede these terms to a bunch
of young hooligans who wouldn't know an 'archives' if it bit them on the
butt :) :) :) . And that's MY $.02 !! ttfn - Jill in Alaska (whose
jaw is still hanging open in disbelief, but hoping that maybe someone is
pulling our collective leg).
