materials including period photographs (if that is a help)

Yes, Virginia Tech does have many of the records of the Norfolk and
Western Railway. A brief history of the manifestations of the
company can be found at:
http://spec.lib.vt.edu/railroad/rrintro.htm
And a guide to our collections can be found at:
http://spec.lib.vt.edu/railroad/guiderr.htm

We also have an image database with hundreds of photographs:
http://scholar.lib.vt.edu/imagebase/

We have blueprints of bridges, and the Hotel Roanoke owned and
operated by N&W for years, but unfortunately we don't have blueprints
of locomotives.

Hope this helps the railroad buffs out there.
