Re: Records cross country move

Roberta,

I can't speak to the issue of the most economical way to ship the collection
but I'd like to say something about how the records are packed.

First, make sure the records are in very sturdy boxes, well taped. Don't
bother to invest in acid-free containers at this point...the boxes will
pretty much be wrecked by the time you receive them. Make sure the boxes
are numbered so that you can reassemble them into somewhat original order -
although, if they've already been packed once, that may be a moot point.
Hopefully the boxes are well packed without being overpacked. In my
experience, boxes shipped from Congressional offices which were overloaded
tended to be the boxes which suffered the most damage. Not to mention, are
the boxes which could most damage your back.

Good luck!

Subject: Records cross country move

Does anyone have any experience and advice about moving records across
country? One of our previous congressmen is donating his papers, 80-90
cubic feet of material. The government has already paid to move it from
Capitol Hill to Northern Virginia and won't pay for a second move. So we
need to figure out the best and most economical way to get them to El Paso.
Has anyone dealt with this before. Can you recommend a shipper? What
special issues do we need to address with them? I am a somewhat concerned,
knowing regular movers use semi trailers for cross country moves and may
unload and reload your stuff several times before it gets to your
destination. Thanks in advance for your input.
