mold on books

I work in a university library and today we received a number of books
that appear to have conservation needs. One or two of them may have mold.
Since they will eventually make their way to our conservation department,
my question is how does one spot mold on books? The items in question have
yellowed somewhat to a nice cream color and have white splotches on the
first page of the volume and these splotches do not appear any other
parts of the volume. We received these volume from a sub-library within
system who had kept them locally cataloged for a number of years. Thanks
in advance for any information received.

                Respectfully
